It’s going to be a Jersey-filled night on Friday at The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City. And no, we’re not just talking about The Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Melissa Gorga, we’re talking about the man responsible for keeping you grooving all night long, NJ’s own DJ Hollywood.
Even though he now claims residency in Las Vegas, his hard-working, east coast roots seem to have served him well as he now is a household name within the Vegas Club circuit, has worked with and entertained the best of the best in Hollywood, hosts a Las Vegas radio show (“Hollywood Blvd), and owns and operates his own artist management company, The Beatclan, as well as a pizza and gyro restaurant out in Sin City! And somehow, he still makes it a priority to make the trek back to his home state and party with us as a resident DJ at The Pool After Dark.
DJ Hollywood was nice enough to chat it up with us recently about his achievements and awesome career.
TAC: DJ Hollywood. Tell us how this name fits you as a DJ and how you came up with it.
DJ Hollywood: It was given to me when I first began DJing because of my loud personality and the way I dressed. Years later, I was dubbed the “Celebrity DJ” spinning for everyone from Paris Hilton to George Clooney.
TAC: You are a Jersey boy, but incredibly popular within the Las Vegas night club scene. How did you get your big break out there?
DJ Hollywood: I left the Drrttty Jerzz in 94′ on a one way to Vegas. I knew that if I wanted to be successful in my field, I couldn’t think of a bigger stage than Sin City. I started doing private events and weddings to get by and through that, I received a huge opportunity to audition which was at the time, one of four nightclubs in Vegas; The Beach. It was all history from there.
TAC: You also brought the Jersey to Vegas and opened a Pizza & Gyro joint! We approve! What’s the atmosphere like in there? Did you bring a little club feel to it?
DJ Hollywood: Everyone who’s anyone knows the best pizza is an east coast pizza or “pie” as we say. Vegas might have some of the best restaurants in the world, but the pizza places SUCK! There I said it! I couldn’t take it anymore, so Pops and I broke out our secret family recipe and added a little DJ Hollywood flair. We give away a free CD with every pizza purchase, feature mixes from all of my “Beatclan” jocks & even had famed Mayor Oscar Goodman cut the ribbon! That’s what we call Hollywood.
TAC: What’s the story behind creating your very first mix?
DJ Hollywood: It’s not as exciting as many may think. If I recall correctly, I must have gone through 25 tapes before I liked it, and I’m sure it still sucked. Yes you read that right, CASSETTE TAPES!
TAC: Hey, some of the best music originated on cassette tapes! You have won numerous awards over the past decade or so, most recently Best Emcee from The Las Vegas DJ Awards the past two years. What award or accomplishment are you most proud of and why?
DJ Hollywood: Well actually, I just recently won the Emcee award for the third time but seriously who counting anyway. I would have to say having former Las Vegas Mayor, Oscar Goodman proclaiming December 23rd “DJ Hollywood Day” for the city of Las Vegas my crowing achievement…..thus far.
TAC: Of course. You have also performed at concerts for major artists like Gwen Stefani and Dr. Dre. Who is the next artist you would like to spin for and why?
DJ Hollywood: I’ve always been a huge fan of Billy Joel and would relish the chance to collaborate with him.
TAC: You are one of 5 DJs with a residency at our The Pool After Dark. What do you like about playing here?
DJ Hollywood: It’s simple. The Pool brought the party back. What I mean is, there’s too much politics that go into nightclubs nowadays. The Pool lets you get crazy and offers a no holds bar party atmosphere. The staff is fun and friendly, and you don’t have to worry about uptight security guards and rules that never end. My favorite place to spin by far.
TAC: What are your favorite songs or mixes to spin live and why?
DJ Hollywood: I get this question asked a lot and the truth is, I don’t have definitive favorite style of music I’d rather spin. I’m an energy junky and feed off any crowd, so if the crowd is jumping, that’s my favorite music!
TAC: Your website says you have extensive knowledge in all genres of music. How do you keep up with all of the different trends?
DJ Hollywood: Music isn’t only my job, it’s my passion. In order for me to maintain my status, I work extremely hard studying music so I’m able to deliver a powerful performance.
TAC: What are your favorite jams on your iPod right now?
DJ Hollywood: When I’m not behind the decks I prefer adult contemporary. Sade and Billy Joel are just a few I mellow out to.
TAC: What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t a DJ and never discovered the business?
DJ Hollywood: Kicking ass in another field!
