Sean Lowe To Kick Memorial Day Weekend Off Bachelor Style At The Pool After Dark

As we stated on Tuesday, we are ABSolutely excited that The Bachelor, Sean Lowe, is coming to kick of Memorial Day with us at The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City tomorrow night. (Is that joke old yet? Sorry. We like abs. *shrugs*).

Sean was our fav out of all the Bachelors for the past 17 seasons, and if you’re all about the Bachelor Nation, you prob felt the same since this season’s ratings were at record highs.

Our fav Bachelor went straight on into an amazing 8-week run on Dancing With The Stars and was recently eliminated on May 8th after the tango proved to be a little too tricky, but that’s okay because the man  has a wedding to plan! And it’s going to be televised on ABC! Score for us! And we love his new fiancé, she’s such a regular, cute, quirky chick!

Without fangirling too much, we recently sat down to ask Sean a few Q’s about all of this and more. Check out the interview, below!

Sean Lowe

TAC: We are excited to have you in Atlantic City! Have you ever been here before? What are you most looking forward to about hosting Aqua Fridays at The Pool After Dark?

Sean Lowe: I’ve never been to Atlantic City. I’ve heard great things about the city and I’m excited to be a part of the nightlife by hosting Aqua Fridays.

TAC: You were the favorite Bachelor of many (including us)! We loved that you were able to poke fun at yourself during the whole process. How did you not allow yourself to get caught up in the hype & was there any moment where the whole process felt too much for you?

Sean Lowe: I went into the Bachelor knowing that I wanted to enjoy it. Although there were definitely stressful moments, I knew I was lucky to be in the position I was in and I always tried to have fun with it.

TAC: What’s one thing about being the Bachelor that most people wouldn’t realize?

Sean Lowe: It’s exhausting! Very little sleep and you always have to be “on” in front of the cameras.

TAC: What’s the most important lesson you learned being the Bachelor?

Sean Lowe: You’ve got to be true to who you are if you’re ever going to find the right person.

TAC: What about through your experience on Dancing With The Stars?

Sean Lowe: It was so much more physically demanding than I thought it would be.

TAC: Tell us one thing you learned about Catherine since the show wrapped and one thing she has learned about you.

Sean Lowe: She’s such a hard worker. She is really passionate about her career. I think she’s learned that I’m very driven.

TAC: Can you give us any wedding details?!

Sean Lowe: Nothing yet.

TAC: Fine! We’ll wait! Will you watch any of Des’ season? What kind of guy do you think would be the perfect match for her?

Sean Lowe: Yes. I think she needs someone who is down to earth and doesn’t want the fame that the show brings.

TAC: Who would be your pick for the next Bachelor and why?

Sean Lowe: Jef Holm, he was a fan favorite and he’s definitely a unique personality.

TAC: What do you hope your life looks like in five years?

Sean Lowe: I’m not sure, but that’s the exciting part about our lives. We don’t know where we’re going but we know we’ll be happy together.

Aww. We guess we’ll never really know, huh? Catch Sean at The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort tomorrow and get your holiday weekend off to the best start! We may or may not be first in line. Your guess. Pricing starts at $10!

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes To Provide A Night Of Fun, Emotion & Music At House Of Blues Atlantic City!

Who is in the mood for a good, ol’ Jersey style, Atlantic City Memorial Day weekend? A little BBQ food, some gambling, the sun and sand of the Atlantic City beach and boardwalk…sound good?! Well, we have one more way to add a little more “Jersey shore” to your itinerary and we’re NOT talking about the TV show. We’re talking about Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, one of the first bands to come out of the Jersey Shore (Asbury Park, duh) in the ’70s. This is the same place and time that birthed Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. Needless to say, Southside and Bruce know each other pretty well. The Boss even has writing credits and vocals on some of his albums.

Anyway, these guys have a great following in the Northeast as well as Europe (go figure) and will be playing the House Of Blues Atlantic City at Showboat on Friday. Learn more about the band and check out an interview we did with Southside earlier last week, below.

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes

TAC: This band seems very hard working and has had ups and downs, but always seems to emerge with small victories. What about this band makes you the most proud?

Southside Johnny: I think it’s the consistency. You’re on the road and you get to that 38th day, and you start to be really tired and a lot of the guys have kids, and they want to be home. You can get to that point where you don’t know if you want to continue, but you get up on stage and have a great show, and you realize that’s what you do it for. We never dog it on stage. We always find some way to have fun, find something new and enjoy the audience’s reaction.

TAC: Bruce Springsteen has writing credits on a bunch of your songs. Tell us something about him that we wouldn’t know.

Southside Johnny: Well obviously, he’s a very generous guy. He’s given me some great songs; songs that really could have been hits for him. He’s a very generous man. I shouldn’t say this because he doesn’t like to talk about it, but he does a lot of charity things. He always calls me up and says ‘Southside! We’re gonna do a thing!’. And we go and do charity shows with Bobby Bandiera in the band, and we do Chuck Berry and Wilson Pickett and we have a great time. He really believes in doing things for other people.

TAC: Oh, Bruce. Now let’s flip it! What’s something about Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes that many people don’t know but should?!

Southside Johnny: I can tell you something about me, I’m a bird watcher! I love watching birds and going into the woods with binoculars, a camera and a bird book, and just being lost in there for hours. I’ve gone all around the world looking at birds: Costa Rica, the South of France, Spain, Mexico, a lot of places. All across the United States too.

TAC: No way! Songs From The Barn was released in January 2013. What’s special about this album?

Southside Johnny: This is a side project of mine that is semi-acoustic. We play a lot of acoustic guitars. We have some electric instruments too, but it’s just a chance to do different material. It started out with me wanting to do some folk-ish things and a little country; and I started writing songs for it and thought well, we might as well record it if we’re going to put that much work into it. But really it’s not Jukes. There’s not a horn section, it’s not R&B, although there is R&B on it. It’s just more acoustic oriented. Nothing I do fits in any category.

TAC: You change your set lists nightly. What’s the process like of deciding what fits for what crowd?

Southside Johnny: Usually it happens within the show. I usually pick a song with how I feel that night. If I feel like doing something hard and fast, or something soulful, whatever it is I feel like doing. When I walk on stage, I’ve been known to change the very first song if I feel like the audience wants something different than what I want. But during the show, if I want to do the song, I’ll just do the song. I’ll call it out or I’ll just start singing it and we’re very flexible. The band is great that way. They can handle every curveball I throw at them which gives you a lot of freedom on stage. It makes you feel emotionally involved in the show because you’re not locked into anything. If I had to do the same show night after night, I might as well work in a cubicle in an office. I just can’t do the same thing over and over again that’s one of the reasons why I got into the music business.

TAC: Many of your followers hail from the Northeast and the UK and Europe. How are they similar? What is a Southside Johnny fan like?

Southside Johnny: Well usually, they sing along. A lot of times, they come up and sing, too. It’s just the enthusiasm. We’re not trying to prove anything. We’re not trying to convince anybody that we’re great. All we’re trying to do is play music and enjoy it and hope that the audience enjoys it, and it bounces back and forth between the audience and the band. You break down the barriers and it just becomes a night of fun, emotion and music. The Europeans understand that instinctively. The difference is that when I tell a joke on stage in America, people don’t laugh. But when I tell a joke in Europe, they don’t laugh because they’re translating it!

TAC: What can fans expect from your hometown show at HOB on 5/24?

Southside Johnny: It’s pretty much spontaneous. We don’t have routines or anything like that. We just let fly on stage! Hopefully there will be some humor too. Like I say, it is not a night of deep, philosophical seeking. It is a night of fun and enjoyment. If there’s an emotional moment in there, that’s great too. We want to have two hours-worth of music instead of worries of the day or any of that. Just come, get excited, and enjoy yourself.

TAC: We’re sure you have some memorable stories from Atlantic City over the years! What sticks out in your mind?

Southside Johnny: I have one from the last time we played in Atlantic City. Our road manager dragged me over to the $5 machine and I subsequently put $500 into the damn machine and watched it disappear! So he owes me $500! I’m gonna get him for that!

TAC: Well, you’re coming to the right place to get him back! Does performing live still give you those same feelings you felt while doing it in the mid ‘70s?

Southside Johnny: It’s different. It’s changed a lot more now, but I still get a thrill out of doing it and when it really connects with the audience, and you’re lost in it, it’s the same thing. It’s just the greatest feeling in the world. It’s better than sex! But not much!

TAC: LOLz. What do you still hope to achieve with this band and your career?

Southside Johnny: I just want to keep making music. There’s always things to do; there’s always styles to explore. The last studio album The Jukes made came out of a lot of anger from the recession with people losing their houses and losing their jobs. You write about what’s happening to you at the moment or in the last few moments of your life. And I’m in a pretty good place now, so I think that the next album will be R&B, love song, upbeat stuff. But, we’ll see! It’s an adventure all the time.

Sounds like it! Just keep doing what you’re doing, Southside Johnny!

Isn’t this man a hoot, though? And a damn good musician! Jersey’s finest for sure! Come see Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes in action on Friday at House Of Blues at Showboat Atlantic City at 8:45 p.m. Get your last minute tickets here!

That has to be an awesome gig; making someone’s dream come true! Needless to say, Robin Leach does know a thing or two about millionaires. We caught up with him recently to discuss his role in the One Million Dollar Giveaway and more! Check out the interview, below.

Robin Leach

TAC: You started out as the youngest “Page One” reporter for Daily Mail in the U.K. at just 18 years-old. How did you know that this was what you wanted to do since then?

Robin Leach: I was 15 when I left school and joined the local newspaper and then from 18 I went from The Harrow Observer to The Daily Mail. I thought that the daily newspaper, that in those days came through the letter box, was magic. This was in the days before there were 24-hour news channels, so you got your news from the morning newspaper. I couldn’t believe the miracle of every morning coming down and finding it there at the front door with the news of the day before with pictures and stories. I just thought it was incredible! I guess there must have been ink in my blood because that’s the profession that I chose to go into.

TAC: You have been an entertainment & celebrity reporter for 50 years now.

Robin Leach: Yeah, actually a little longer now! There was this 25-year trip through telling stories on television that started at CNN and went to Entertainment Tonight and Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous, and of course a lot of people forget or don’t know that I was one of the co-founders of the Food Network.

TAC: What are some of your favorite stories you have covered throughout your career?

Robin Leach: A lot of the stories I have done have been personality profiles on some of the biggest stars in the world and also on Lifestyles, we shot profiles on absolutely amazing people who were the wealthiest and most successful people in the world. So rather than pull out individual names, people who ended up achieving things that people told them was never possible, have always fascinated me. I love Horatio Alger’s stories of people who go from rags to riches. I love stories of people finding success who perhaps leave a lousy job and end up being a star. Rod Stewart is a friend of mine who started out being a grave digger and became an International pop music phenomenon. There are legions of those stories and those are the ones that have fascinated me over the years.

TAC: Most people relate you with your famous phrase from Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous “champagne wishes and caviar dreams”. Is there any kind of story behind how you coined this phrase?

Robin Leach: There were two of us and we were drinking a lot of bubbly when we were writing the presentation for Lifestyles! I’m a great believer in bookending television shows with something that sums up what you’ve just seen for 60 minutes. And so we were wrestling with lots of different catch phrases and buzz words, and we dismissed “platinum playgrounds” and we dismissed “golden circles”, and we really had come to the end of our creative juices. And I said let’s open another bottle of champagne and maybe it will come to us. The funny thing was that said it right at that moment. And what goes with champagne? Caviar! People wish and dream and people’s wishes come true, people’s dreams come true, and so it just all fit together nicely.

TAC: If you were to feature yourself now on Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous, what would we see?

Robin Leach: That’s an interesting question; I’ve never been asked that in my entire life! I think people might be surprised that I still work very hard at what I do and what I love. And like many people in my business have said, when it’s not a job, it’s not work. If you love your work, then it’s a joy to do it every day. I’m still involved in a lot of creative writing and television productions that come in and out of Las Vegas. I’m still involved with a lot of chefs and their restaurants from my days on the Food Network, and it’s nice nowadays to donate what I earn to the different charities that I support here in Las Vegas. As you may or may not know, my fee in Atlantic City is going to go to Keep Memory Alive which is our brain research clinic here to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. And then I also support Opportunity Village which is one of my friend’s, Penn  Jillette’s, of Penn & Teller at The Rio Hotel. He’s on Celebrity Apprentice at the moment and so far he’s won $80,000 for Opportunity Village. So it’s a time in my life where I’m able to do good for the people that helped me along the way.

TAC: Did you ever expect to make yourself a celebrity as a celebrity reporter or was it something that just kind of happened naturally?

Robin Leach: No, it was never my intention! People that watched me on television made me that way! I’d be just as happy being anonymous behind the camera, but as I said, you take what you’re given and you try to put it to good use. I’m not rich, but I am famous. I’m comfortable, not rich. I wouldn’t qualify for the people that were on my own show. I would qualify for “Lifestyles Of The Comfortable And Famous”.

TAC: What are your thoughts on the changes on entertainment reporting that have happened throughout your career for example, now we have outlets like TMZ that have people staked out everywhere at all times, looking for dirt as well as social media coming into play which can somewhat take stories away from reporters in some cases…

Robin Leach: I’ve never played the paparazzi game. I’ve only ever done where I’ve been invited in as a reporter. In my early days as a journalist in England, I did get involved in steak-outs of famous people who were newsworthy; whether it be they were in trouble or had something successful to report. But in those days, we were still gentlemanly about it. And it greatly perturbs me now when you’ve got these camera people who really are paparazzi and really dangerous in their stalking techniques; chasing people in high speed car chases. And it’s competition for the dollar. A lot of the magazines and newspapers that buy those photos contribute to a climate that is not healthy. I’ll be the first to tell you that Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous was the first tabloid television show, but it celebrated success in a nice way. We didn’t storm our way into people’s homes or lives, we went there because we asked and we asked politely and nicely, and they extended the invitation. When I see some of these confrontational shows with cameras in faces provoking fights or other situations, that’s not good. One, it’s not honest, and two; everybody is in such a competitive state. They’re exaggerating and they’re fabricating. It’s good to be from the beginning when this was a nice, healthy business.

TAC: What are you most looking forward to about coming to Harrah’s Resort over Memorial Day weekend & making someone a millionaire?

Robin Leach: I just love the idea that somebody who has a dream of becoming a millionaire will actually walk out of Atlantic City with $1 million. It will change their lives and they can set themselves up forevermore as a result. To take someone’s dream and make it come true, to transform someone’s wish into a reality, that’s a wonderful and beautiful thing to be able to do and we’re doing it with a lot of fun. Any one of those 19 people can win a prize and one of them will win $1 million. What a way to celebrate a great American holiday!

TAC: You’ve done most of your work in Las Vegas, but are you excited to come to Atlantic City and what do you like about it?

Robin Leach: I’ve traveled all over the world living in London, living in the Caribbean, living in New York, living in Los Angeles and now living in Las Vegas, but I like Las Vegas. Las Vegas is a very exciting city and Atlantic City is the same kind of town.

TAC: Is there a certain kind of story you’ve been itching to report on that you haven’t had the chance to yet or have you pretty much knocked everything off of your bucket list?

Robin Leach: I think we’ve knocked everything off the bucket list! Personally, I’m sorry that I never got to interview Katharine Hepburn when she was alive because I think that she was a great, gracious and venerable lady of the movie screen. I would have loved to live in the era of Humphrey Bogart and people like that were at the height of their movie careers. I think that unfortunately we have lost a lot of what I call superstar quality today and we have a lot of unknown rat pack actors.  If it was stories that I could have/would have wished for, it would have been to be able to do the show in that era long gone by. But everyone from Elton John to Celine Dion to you name it, they’re sort of good acquaintances of mine and they’re always gracious with their time for us. I’ve talked with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, we went to The Vatican and did a tour with The Pope, I don’t know what else we have left to do! We know all the top chefs in the world, we’ve profiled all of them and done all the superstars.

We know one thing you still have left to do, Robin Leach, and that’s make someone a millionaire at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City! Catch Robin check this one off of his bucket list live at 10 p.m. on Sunday, May 26th in the lobby. And don’t forget! This is the first of four times a millionaire will be made at Harrah’s Resort this summer!

The Neelys

TAC: We’re so happy to have you back with us for this year’s Atlantic City Food & Wine Festival! What’s your favorite part about this weekend we have here in July?

Pat:  The Cooking Demo is always my favorite highlight. Our demos are somewhat different because we have so much interaction with the fans.

Gina:  Thank you for wonderful compliment, I would have to say my favorite part is The Gospel Brunch, just hanging with the fans and having an opportunity to mix with them.

TAC: (See what we mean? They’re SO NICE!). Your “big break” came when Pat was cooking on camera for the Deen brothers show, Road Tasted. How did that opportunity come about and did you have any ideas about what possibilities could come out of that for you?

Pat:  Our restaurants had been featured on national TV before. When we got the call that the Deen brothers would be stopping by, we were delighted. Of course, we had no idea that it would change our lives forever. I always say TV found us, we didn’t find TV.

Gina:  I basically was just supporting my husband.  Who knew where it would go!

TACDown Home With The Neelys continues to be one of the highest-rated shows on Food Network. What do you think it is about your show that resonates with so many people?

Pat:  Our show is unscripted and we are just a normal family. I think most viewers can relate to our family and recipes.

Gina:  I think what resonates with so many people is that we are like any other family.  We strive for balance and normalcy and people find that relatable. We laugh, joke and have fun which is entertaining. I’ve always felt that the audience captured that and held on to it.

TAC: What is one of the most exciting life moments you have had, that you wouldn’t have had if it weren’t for the show?

Pat:  Traveling the country and meeting so many amazing people.

Gina:  There have been so many, it’s hard to choose!  My latest favorite moment has been working as the new spokesperson for George Foreman Grills.  I feel very honored to be a part of their family. Of course, it’s always been a thrill to meet people all over the country and hear straight from them how we’ve touched their lives or the lives of their loved ones.  It’s absolutely amazing to know that you have had that kind of effect on people.

TAC: One of your signature dishes is BBQ spaghetti! How did this recipe come to fruition?

Pat:  When we opened our restaurant over twenty years ago, we wanted to implement different ways to serve BBQ. BBQ spaghetti was only one way we expressed that. We also served BBQ salad and BBQ nachos.

Gina:  Pat’s mom always made spaghetti for them since there were so many boys growing up in that house.  That dish has always seemed like a natural fit on the menu.   I must admit it is one of the most intriguing dishes people ask us about.

TAC: What are your daily meals like? Do you cook for yourselves the way you show us how to on television?

Pat:  We don’t eat out much. The recipes featured on the show are our own dishes that we love. We cook these dishes all the time for our family.

Gina:  Our daily meals resemble what you see on the show.  We’ve always kept it real on the show, which I think is another reason people love it.  They are just everyday dishes that the average family would enjoy. Not over the top but more comforting.

TAC: Do you think that your brand will someday expand to include other cuisines more frequently along with BBQ?

Pat:  Absolutely! As a matter of fact, it already does.  When we opened our restaurant in New York City, Neely’s Barbecue Parlor, we made sure that the menu went beyond BBQ to feature a lot of traditional Southern comfort food recipes.

Gina:  I think we’ve managed to do that already with the show, our cookbooks, our demos and our restaurant in New York.  We love BBQ, but we’ve always wanted to bring more to the table…literally!

TAC: Awesome sauce! What are the pros and cons about working so closely with your spouse every day?

Gina:  Anytime you work with your spouse it creates all kinds of challenges that you have to face together. You really come to rely on each other and you learn to compromise even more than you probably would otherwise. You definitely figure out each other’s strengths and weaknesses and you have to come together as a team. The con is oftentimes people tend to forget that there are two of us and lose sight of the fact that we each have our own opinions.

Pat:  I think Gina sums it up well!

TAC: Gina – you recently lost 20 lbs and 12 inches to promote the George Forman Grills Weight Loss Challenge! Congrats! What advice can you give to those that love to try and enjoy different cuisines but still strive to be healthy in their everyday lives?

Gina:  My advice is simple:  Take the George Foreman Grills Weight Loss Challenge!!!  You can still enjoy your favorite foods cooked in less time in a healthier way.  My goal on the Challenge was not just to lose the 20 lbs, but to help myself and others to find a healthier lifestyle for everyday living.  Having done it, I feel fabulous, I have more energy and I’ve completely changed my outlook on life.  Give it a go!

Blue’s Traveler’s Ben Wilson Gives Us The Runaround About Show At Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City & More!

But YOUUUUUUUUU. Why you wanna give me a runaround? Is it a sure-fire way to speed things up, when all it does is slow me downnn. Oh, sorry. Just singing a little Blues Traveler. You know you love it too.

Now that we got that out of our system, you know they are coming to perform at The Concert Venue at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City on May 24th, right?! And you know that the original members of the group, John Popper, Chan Kinchla and Brendan Hill, have been together for 25 years and formed in Princeton, NJ? You may even remember them from the NYC jam band days of the late ’80s/eary ’90s. Whatever the case, you certainly know that these dudes have been around for awhile and have been making real music. Music full of a little bit of jam band, a little bit of blues, a little bit of rock and a little bit of pop.

Bassist Tad Kinchla (brother of Chan) and keyboardist Ben Wilson entered the scene after original bassist’s Bobby Sheehan’s death in 1999 and have fit harmoniously with the rest ever since. We actually caught up with one of these “old newbies” yesterday to chat about the show, the band and more! Check it out, below.

Blues Traveler

TAC: You’re in the midst of a pretty big tour. How do you keep yourselves healthy, energized and ready to go these days on the road?

Ben Wilson: I think everybody sort of has a different strategy. John is a serious night owl, so he gets up about three hours before the show, showers up, does his warm ups and kind of likes his show to be a mid-morning workout or something like that. So every show is sort of a new thing. Chan, Tad and get up mid-morning, drink some coffee, chill out, afternoon gym run, then an afternoon nap. You know, pretty rough life out there on the road! And then we bring it on in to show time. But Chan’s knee has been bothering him so now he and Brendan have been kind of wrestling about playing X-Box in the back lounge of the bus! That’s how it works. It’s really just managing the down time. People have these ideas about being on the road, but you have a remarkable amount of free time. It’s not like free time when you’re at home and you have your car and can drive wherever you want and have all your little toys in your house. You’re sort of restricted to either the bus or the hotel or that sort of thing.

TAC: What’s been your favorite track to perform live lately and why?

Ben Wilson: I’m a big fan of “Recognize My Friend”. It’s very soulful in the way that we play it. It has a really cool guitar line that is kind of in harmony with the bass and it’s sort of hypnotic. It goes from small dynamically to big dynamically with John singing the lead and Tad, Brendan and I singing backup, so there’s a big chorus kind of effect. It has kind of a chugging repetitiveness that when you have that sort of repetitiveness, you can add little things in to add flavor and to add energy, and it kind of ends up in this big peak which is nice.

TAC: What can fans expect from your show here at Harrah’s Resort on 5/24?

Ben Wilson: Unbridled awesomeness! Because of the legacy of the band with a lot of hits in the ‘90s, we obviously want to touch on those. You hate it when you go see a band and you leave saying ‘Oh, they didn’t play this song or that song.’ We don’t want to be those guys. A lot of musicianship, great singing by John. I think he’s an under-appreciated singer and also his harmonica virtuosity. We’ve been trying to have a little more dynamic in the show where there’s one or two very quiet songs. John feels like that we’ve had so much of our career rocking out in a live setting, and we still want to do that, but he wants to have a little bit of representation of the softer side. For the ladies!

TAC: We dig that. You have a little break in your tour after your show here. Will you stick around and be celebrating some of your Memorial Day weekend with us?

Ben Wilson: I think I will be flying home to spend some of my Memorial Day weekend with my family. And then at the conclusion of Memorial Day weekend, we have to fly out to San Jose for a show out there, then we fly back to the east coast. It’s gonna start getting really busy here pretty quick.

TAC: Oh, wow. Not too much of a break then! You guys have released 6 albums since you joined the band. Is there one of these you are proud of the most or feel like you were able to deliver it the way you wanted as an artist without pressure from record label and industry execs?

Ben Wilson: After the first couple records when I was in the band, we didn’t have a ton of industry pressure so to speak. After Bridge, we got off of Interscope and that was where you would feel pressure because they spent so much money so they have a vested interest in getting some of it back, and so there was more heat on that deal. After that, it’s more of a question of we want you guys to feel satisfied as artists, but we also want to know that there’s something we can sort of push. Part of being Blues Traveler is the jammy/musicianship side, but then there’s also the poppy side. People expect a little of that on each record. There have been varying degrees of trying to live up to that. This last record, Suzie Cracks The Whip, feels like one where we kind of got back being able to meld the two sides of Blues Traveler in a way that felt very real and not in order to try to satisfy one side or the other.

TAC: We were just going to ask you about Suzie Cracks The Whip because that ranked the highest out of all Blues Traveler albums made in the last 10 years. What is it about this one that seemed to resonate so well?

Ben Wilson: I think that was one of the reasons. I think that also as a band, we’ve been writing material together for a lot of years and the original three guys for 25 years, and we turned a little bit to some outsiders to breathe some new life into our process and add ideas to the ways that songwriting can go. I think that it relieved some of the pressure. I don’t think that some of the songs were songs that we couldn’t come up with on our own musically, but I think when somebody brings something in and it’s a whole entity, you don’t feel the same pressure to meld it and change it. You don’t have to layer a bunch of extra stuff on it which we tend to do when one of the five of us brings material in on our own. So it’s a good learning process. And I think it was also the mixture of having Sam Hollander, our producer come in. He is a very pop-oriented guy, but really understood the heart and soul of Blues Traveler because he was around when Blues Traveler was coming up in the early days in New York City. He was kind of part of that scene with the whole jam band thing that was blowing up at the time.

TAC: Crystal Bowersox from American Idol also has vocals on this album. How did this collaboration come to be?

Ben Wilson: She is a big Blues Traveler fan and has been for a number of years apparently. After she had her run on Idol, her and John somehow connected and we need a female vocalist. John said he would call her and she just happened to be on her way to another mutual friend of ours’ studio in New Mexico to do some songwriting and recording. So, we sent him all the files and she was able to sing all the parts and send it on back in two days. We were just blown away. When Sam was doing the mixing, he was looking to use it in certain parts, but it just seemed to make the most sense to use it all the way through. The cool thing is that the song was written by Carrie Rodriguez who is obviously a woman, so it was nice to have that representation on that particular tune.

TAC: John & Tad are big on the twitter! Have they mentioned anything they’ve learned about your guys’ fans through social media and do you think you’ll ever get on there too?

Ben Wilson: I don’t know if I’ll be a twitter guy. I’m not sure how responsive Brendan, Chan and I are to the social media thing. I can’t say that we have anything to be particularly proud of in terms of our additions to that part of the Blues Traveler world or the Blues Traveler media empire! But, John is very active on twitter and he does occasionally come in and tell us this or that, or he feels the need to go on twitter to explain something. We’ve had a couple times where we were booked to do some shows and then way out in advance something comes up where we won’t be able to do them whether it’s our fault or the promoter’s fault.  He’s used twitter as a way to explain that which has been helpful. It’s a way of keeping people realizing that we’re alive and well.

TAC: What’s next for you guys?

TAC: That is unclear. We’ve been playing live for so long and that’s not going anywhere. We love doing that. John has been pursuing little side things. I’ve been pursuing side things. John and I together have been pursing side things. So let’s just see if we can keep Blues Traveler rolling and also investigate some of these opportunities that maybe in the past we haven’t been able to follow through on just because of wanting to do Blues Traveler. And also with the whole change in the music industry, are we gonna start just releasing a single every six months? Are we going to do another record? Are records dead? That whole thing. As a band with the time we’ve spent doing this career, what’s the best avenue for us? We signed a 2-record deal with 429 Records who released Suzie, so if they want us to do another record, I suppose that’s what we’ll do. It’s just a question of is that the best thing. Is it better to do a six-song EP? It’s weird! Most people now like that one song, so they don’t buy the CD anymore. Musicians, artists and also labels have a lot of complicity with that because for so long, they’ve made one good song and then throw a bunch of shit songs on there and people got burned spending $15 on a CD for one tune. It’s just hard to figure out where the whole thing is gonna land, but Blues Traveler’s not going anywhere, that’s for darn sure!

Woo! Ben Wilson has spoken, ya’ll! These guys are real  musicians, so you KNOW you’ll be in for a good show. Grab your tickets for Blues Traveler on May 24th at Harrah’s Resort here if you haven’t already. They hit the stage at 8 p.m.!

Ian Ziering Ready For The Pool After Dark: Talks From Jersey To 90210 & More!

There’s still a lot going on in the world of Ian Ziering. And it’s not 1994 anymore. The recently turned 49-year-old sure doesn’t resemble one! He just became a dad for the second time at the end of April and is gearing up for a run with The Chippendales at The Rio Las Vegas starting June 6th. But perhaps most exciting to us is that he will be hosting Epic Saturdays THIS SATURDAY at The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City! Do you think he’ll give us a sneak peak of some of those moves he’s been working on for Vegas? They gotta be good. He was on Dancing With The Stars after all.

We obviously couldn’t take the excitement of this one, so we tracked Ian down to ask him a few questions! Check it out, below!

Ian Ziering

TAC: We are looking forward to having you here with us in Atlantic City! What are you most looking forward to about hosting Epic Saturdays at The Pool After Dark?

Ian Ziering: I am looking forward to getting together with a bunch of friends at an awesome night club in AC.  Its been a long time!

TAC: And you actually grew up in Jersey! What are your best memories about growing up here?

Ian Ziering: Growing up in New Jersey was fantastic. I have such great memories of school and summer camp fun with my friends; friends that I’m still very close to today.

TAC: How did a Jersey boy like you get your big break for Beverly Hills 90210?

Ian Ziering: I started acting when I was 12. Living in West Orange made it easy to get into NYC for auditions. I guess I was in the right place at the right time with the right stuff when my agent called with an audition for 90210. I live in California but Jersey will always be home.

TAC: Aw, we love that! What is the most valuable lesson or experience that you took out of your amazing run as Steve Sanders?

Ian Ziering: Being on a globally successful television program was an incredible experience. I take away an appreciation for everything I learned on the journey.

TAC: What is one of your favorite behind the scenes memories from the show?

Ian Ziering: Tiffani Thiessen once flashed her boobs at me off camera. That was pretty memorable!

TAC: That is better than any answer we could have hoped for to that question! *wink* You will be starting a run with the Chippendales at our sister property, Rio Las Vegas, in June! What has your preparation been for this thus far?

Ian Ziering: I have been dieting and exercising like a madman! The Chippendales set the bar pretty high so I’m doing everything I can just to avoid embarrassing myself. I’ve been working on the choreography as well.

TAC: Dude, you got this! Most 49-year-olds wouldn’t find themselves joining the Chippendales period. What are your anti-aging secrets?!

Ian Ziering: I have always taken care of myself. Diet and exercise have always been part of my wheelhouse. Taking care of my skin has also been important. My first facial was at 12 years old. I continue to get them, but these days a clear complexion isn’t as important as a youthful appearance, so I use products that work on a genetic level. Nu Skin has brought some revolutionary anti-aging products to market and I swear by them all.

TAC: Very cool and informative. And finally, Congratulations! You just had your second baby girl a couple weeks ago! How has fatherhood changed you?

Ian Ziering: Being a father is the best job I’ve ever had! Having an incredible wife, and two baby girls is a dream come true for me!

And our dream come true is having you at The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort! If you concur, pricing starts at $20! Be there!

Relient K’s Matt Hoopes Chats Up Show At House Of Blues Atlantic City & More

Relient K is about to hit the House Of Blues Atlantic City stage this Saturday as part of their current tour with Hellogoodbye.  Although drummer Ethan Luck exited the band days before the tour began in April, and their newest album, Collapsible Lung, was pushed back from an April 23rd release date to a July 2nd, Relient K is soldiering on full steam ahead and not giving into these forces of nature. And we must say, it seems like they’re having a whole heck of a lot of fun doing it!

Pegged as Christian rockers, these dudes from Canton, Ohio hit the mainstream with their single “Be My Escape” off of their 2004 release Mmhmm, below.

The band actually had three previous albums and three more that followed and through it all, they’ve been through about seven drummers and three bassists. Lead singer Matt Thiessen and lead guitarist and background vocalist Matt Hoopes have remained the constants. Awesome music has also remained a constant too, so really… it’s all good!

We caught up with Matt Hoopes for a bit yesterday about all this and more! Check out the interview, below.

Relient K

TAC: You guys are named after your car. He had a Plymouth Reliant K. What was it about the name of that car that you wanted to name your band after?

Matt Hoopes: It was a bit of an inside joke. My grandmother used to use it as a mail carrier car out in the country. She lived on a farm and she was a mail carrier, so she had this old, beat up car she used for that. She gave it to me when I was 16 and I was super stoked to have a car, but it was just falling apart and rusting out. I put a bunch of band stickers on the back and it just somehow became an inside joke that I was impressing all the ladies with my really cool car. There was this one night we were out to dinner and it was the first time that Matt [Thiessen] had heard about it when we started playing music together and he was like: ‘What is this K car? It’s so funny!’ And he was laughing about it and said that we should call our band that. It just stuck. There’s no real reason to it, it’s just kind of an inside joke that stuck.

TAC: You have a new album, Collapsible Lung, set to be released in July. How is this album different from your previous work?

Matt Hoopes: This album is a bit of a pop experiment. We just decided to not make a record like we have ever made before and just kind of take each song for what it is. In that vein, the record is all over the place. We recorded things in different ways. We did some recording in Matt’s house and we did some recording in really nice studios as well, so it’s kind of all over the map as far as that goes. With each song though, we tried to take every element for what it was and really think about what each song needed. Did it need 1 guitar or 7 guitars or zero guitars? What does it need? We were able to kind of be creative on that level as far as putting songs together. Even in the writing process, there are a few songs that we worked on with several different writers. We’ve never done that before and that was an experience. Just to come at it at a different angle, that was our main goal on this entire record. I had a lot of fun doing it. I’m really proud of it. Even in the writing process, we would get in with some guys and it was interesting. Sometimes we would start with just a drum beat and we would say okay, now we have this drum beat, let’s come up with a chord progression to go on top of it. That’s usually backwards of how we normally write songs where you kind of come up with the melody and lyric first or maybe the chord progression first, but never a drum. It just kind of helps us move forward and think outside of the box of our own heads which we kind of felt like we had to do making our seventh record. We made a lot of great songs over the years and had a lot of fun doing it, but we really didn’t want to make the same record again. The idea of that just sounded boring. I’m really proud of it. A lot of the songs turned out really great.

TAC: We were just going to ask what the writing process is like for you! You are answering our questions!

Matt Hoopes: Yeah, Matt’s been the primary writer in our band and he’s been writing songs since he could play one string on the guitar when we were in junior high. He’s just one of those prolific writers. I think he’s really grown as a lyric writer as well. We’ve been doing music together since we were in high school and it’s really cool to think about that and where we’ve come. Matt’s actually been doing a lot of writing outside the band as well which is kind of where the idea to bring in other writers to what we were doing sprouted from as well.

TACCollapsible Lung is named after a track on the album. Why did you choose that track to represent the album?

Matt Hoopes: That song came about as probably the last song that we finished writing. Just Matt and I wrote that song, and it kind of encompassed that last three years since we put out an album. It kind of encompassed all the songs. It was like an explanation of all the songs, just the kind of things we’ve been through, and how we’ve dealt with those things. The record is pretty honest, but a little bit ambiguous, and I think that song just helped paint that picture a little more clearly.

The record is just all over the place. There are serious songs; there are almost funny songs that are really lighthearted. We were initially talking about calling the album “What The…”. We had talked about calling it “So, This Is Awkward”. I liked both of those titles for the album. I think they are very odd and us, but I think we decided to go with the more serious side of it. It just felt like the right thing to do.

TAC: Your band has been through a lot of transition over the years. Is there ever a struggle to try to maintain the consistency and dynamic that you know works for you?

Matt Hoopes: Yeah. Our drummer Ethan, who has been with us the last five years, just recently decided to leave the band and we wish him the best. I love Ethan as a guy. It’s just one of those things that happened. It’s not like anything went down, and I don’t mean to talk about that too much, but we’ve been through our share of drummers and it is interesting to see the dynamic of playing with different people. We’re very, very selective of people that we bring in musically just because it does make a big difference. The guy that we have playing with us now, Tom, has been a friend for a long time and actually we have a new bass player. Our bass player hasn’t quit, but he’s not able to tour for the time being and Dan is my roommate and he’s playing bass for us. He’s an excellent bass player and a great guy to have on the road. Tom is playing drums and has been our friend for the last five or six years. The other interesting thing is that we were all friends back in Canton, Ohio. It’s just kind of cool to have that history with it as well.

TAC: Again, you are answering our questions! How has playing with Dan and Tom been so far on this tour?

Matt Hoopes: It’s been great. Obviously they are both incredibly talented musicians. It’s just a good vibe. We have a lot of fun at the shows and we’re all just kind of enjoying it and having fun and singing with the kids that come and hanging out.

TAC: What can fans expect from your show here at House Of Blues on Saturday?

Matt Hoopes: Well we were actually supposed to have the new album out on April 23rd which would have been right before the tour started and with the red tape of putting out albums and distribution and iTunes and record labels and all that sort of thing, we decided to push it back until July 2nd.  We’re still playing four or five songs depending on the night from the new record, but in lieu of doing that, we’re also doing a hand of really old songs, so that’s kind of bringing it full circle. We’re just trying to have a show that’s all over the place as far as from our catalogue because we have so many songs to choose from at this point.

TAC: Has the bus fire you guys experienced while on the road in 2007 affected the way you’ve toured since then?

Matt Hoopes: Not at all, it was a fluke thing. I know a couple people who have had bus fires even since then. Our new bass player Dan had a fire about a year ago on the Pennsylvania Turnpike about an hour out of Pittsburgh which is almost exactly where ours happened. It was a lot tougher for them because they owned the bus, but we’ve never owned a bus just because we never felt like it made sense. It’s not a smart business move to own a bus and I still hold by that! It’s such a fluke thing and obviously we feel lucky that no one was hurt and that nothing irreplaceable was lost.

TAC: We’ve noticed that you guys take song requests for your shows on twitter sometimes. What is it like being able to connect with your fans so quickly and have them help you essentially build a different show each night?

Matt Hoopes: That’s been an amazing thing. It’s kind of off the radar. It’s not like we’ve made an announcement that we’re taking requests, but we talked about it a little bit and we’ve been doing an acoustic set in the middle of our show. So if it’s a song that Dan and Tom can’t learn in time, all those old songs are like that, then Matt and I will just play them acoustic. It’s been kind of fun because we’ve been doing songs that we haven’t played in ten years. We’ve been doing songs we’ve never actually played; we’ve been doing cover songs. Last night we did “Sweet Caroline” in Boston and it was really fun. We can do whatever we want and it’s cool to have that freedom where we change the set list every night.

TAC: Do you guys have any pre-show rituals or superstitions before you walk on stage?

Matt Hoopes: I’m not very superstitious at all! We have such a laid back vibe that we really want to portray that. We just kind of hang out backstage and go on. We’re just dudes up here that are lucky to be doing what we’re doing and we try to somehow convey that. We just kind of walk on stage wearing whatever we were wearing earlier and play a rock show and have fun.

Seriously. What’s not to like about going to a rock show and having fun? Do it! Grab your last minute tickets here! Relient K will take the stage at House of Blues at Showboat Atlantic City at 8 p.m.!

Robert Reynolds And The Mavericks Ready To Build Memories Tomorrow Night At House Of Blues Atlantic City

The Mavericks are back after an eight year hiatus and their newest album, In Time, released in February, has been receiving rave reviews. American Songwriter describes it as “as powerful and timeless as anything they have done” and the LA Times states that In Time “embodies the very best of the melting pot experience that’s the very best of the American character.” That’s right. Because The Mavericks are and have always been true to their name. You could never peg them in one hole or another.

While their sound as a whole embodies country, there’s also some smooth latin in there; some pop, some Tex Mex and more. In Time is the perfect next step to their previous six albums (like From Hell To Paradise and What A Crying Shame) even with the eight year time gap.

When all is said and done, it may seem as if the more things change, the more they remain the same because the band is back out at it on the road again for a huge international tour and are stopping here at House Of Blues Atlantic City TOMORROW at Showboat. We caught up with original member Robert Reynolds yesterday for a bit. See what he has to say about this reunion and more, below!

The Mavericks

TAC: We love that you guys are a country-esque band from Miami! And you started off your career in a very different direction (punk alternative). What was the process like of finding the sound that works for you?

Robert Reynolds: There’s nothing like time. Time is a great teacher. If you have the liberty of time you get to try things and with each album you experiment a little and you push the boundaries a little and before you know it, with any luck at all, you begin to arrive at things that are uniquely yours and uniquely work for you and you keep those. You get rid of the things that were part of yesterday and you grasp onto things that are a part of the immediate emotion of the moment. Time is a creative contributor. A band that doesn’t get past a couple of records, how would they ever know what they are going to sound like 24 years later? This is our 24th year together.

TAC: There have been so many artists as of late in the past couple years that have come back after a hiatus and that’s what you guys did last year after an 8 year break. Do you think there’s a reason for this and why was it right for you guys?

Robert Reynolds: I think there’s a couple of things that happen.  You see some bands coming together in a purely reunion kind of format; grabbing as many original members as possible and going out and doing reunion-like circuits. Sometimes on a summer festival, you’ll see multiple 80’s rock acts together, that kind of thing. I believe that’s a different purpose of reforming. In other cases, some rock acts take years between albums. U2 could go 4 to 6 years between records and in a way, they’re not accused of breaking up, they’re respected for taking deliberate, necessary time. In a weird way, we never broke up. We also never gave anyone any indication that we would be doing anything together again. Not even ourselves. So ours is a unique scenario and I would just say that time was a healer. And of course the album is called In Time which means things happen in time, things heal in time, and things change in time, so I believe that time is once again the theme.

TAC: How will you make sure that that fire you feel when playing together again doesn’t fizzle out like it did around 2003?

Robert Reynolds: One is with a little bit of age, you begin to realize the things that were causing you stress and we might avoid those a little better today. I believe our intention today is to work hard and to also take as many necessary breaks as possible to preserve this good energy that we’re feeling. If we can do this right, it may not take eight year breaks between records. It might be that we take a year break and that would be the equivalent of eight years once you have learned this great healing process and how it works. I think we’re just a little bit more guarded. We’re prepared to approach this sensitively. We were on a hamster wheel back in the ‘90s. They had us working hard because we were generating a lot of money for a lot of people beyond ourselves. So they want to keep you working; that’s the nature of the beast. We finally put our foot down and it cost us our friendships and our band entirely, but fortunately it did not. We’re deep brother-like friends and we have a band that was capable of coming back together and being fruitful.

TAC: How is the group dynamic now different than it was in the beginning?

Robert Reynolds: Older, wiser, kinder, gentler, softer. More musical. All those other things really do apply, but in a weird way, we know how to project our music and not let outside forces get too heavy and dictating what’s right for us. We are learning now and have learned how to guide ourselves. That’s been a big part of it.

TAC: What about touring? How has that been going this time around?

Robert Reynolds: It’s been fabulous. We learned a lot about touring back in the day and of course there was a lot of money being spent and probably a lot of money being wasted. We’re a little bit more frugal but we don’t spare any expense when it comes to presenting the music so we’re out here on a pretty costly endeavor because we think that the audience will get the best show; nine pieces on stage, two tour buses, full production. It’s a pretty big deal, but we are more vigilant. We watch the bottom line a little bit more closely.

TAC: What can fans expect from your show here at House Of Blues on 4/19?

Robert Reynolds: There’s going to see a band that’s genuinely delighted to be together again. Our interpersonal relationships together on stage are generating really inspired music. There’s no going through the motions aspect of it. We bring an incredible amount of energy to the stage. We sort of save it all up so that the show is first. We’re out here for making shows, not any of the other silly nonsense. We are dedicated to bringing the same energy each night. Not having two great nights, an okay night, an off night and another good night. We want every night to be fantastic. We’re genuinely really excited to be together.

TAC: Do you have any fun memories of playing in Atlantic City in previous years?

Robert Reynolds: I enjoy Atlantic City for a number of reasons. I saw it when I was a young guy and I was really just starting to learn to travel and I was hitting those interesting American cities and I was just fascinated with it. I enjoyed it historically and to be honest, specific memories of Atlantic City are not many. But I believe we can correct that now! If I’m answering it honestly, we didn’t play in it enough and I believe that it’s time to get in there and do it right so that we can start building those now.

TAC: In Time has been getting rave reviews. Favorite tracks off the album?

Robert Reynolds: The power of “Come Unto Me” is just undeniable. It was recorded with such energy and it drove that track. When it appears on the stage live, it’s a fabulous energetic performance piece. I love “Fall Apart”. There’s something kind of whimsical and ‘60s nostalgic, Herb Alpert and Tijuana brass sort of thing. I grew up on Herb Alpert’s music and the Tijuana brass because it was part of of mother’s record collection and I feel like we kind of capture some of that. His was more often instrumental and this is obviously not, but there’s just something about the track that has that spirit and the ballad, “In Another’s Arms”, is just remarkably powerful. It works for me still. When I hear it, I still feel like it’s a beautiful recording. Great song to begin with, so I commend Raul for that, but the recording is really, really special sounding. It’s emotional and I love that.

TAC: What are your new favorites to play on stage?

Robert Reynolds: A couple of those that I mentioned are easily favorites on stage. “Come Unto Me” really does immediately resonate with the audience. I believe that “Fall Apart” has the spirit that I find on the record shows up on stage and that’s always nice. For the most part, the album songs that are coming to the live stage, are really integrating well to our old catalogue. It’s not like we have to sprinkle them in gently because no one wants to hear the new stuff. The new stuff literally holds its own and could be the show in and of itself.

TAC: Do you have any plans as a group after this huge international tour ends?

Robert Reynolds: We already have some new music in us so we’re feeling good about perpetuating this energy. I would say that our plan is to really bring this music around the world in a very deliberate process and that will take some time. Somewhere along the way, we are going to begin the process of looking at a new album. It won’t be immediately because we are so busy, but I think it’s indicative of a band that’s ready to work.

Sounds good. These guys are legit musicians. Check out The Mavericks tomorrow at House Of Blues at Showboat Atlantic City at 9 p.m. Get last minute tix here!
