Gladiators Take Battle In Caesars Atlantic City Lobby

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Are you here in Atlantic City? Have you been through our Caesars Atlantic City lobby within the last hour or so? If not, you should stop by because we got some gladiator combat going on up in here!

Caesars Atlantic City Gladiator

That’s right! Every half hour (starting at 7 p.m.) two gladiators will duke it out in the lobby of Caesars. Who will live and who will die in this ultimate sword battle? You’ll have to see it to get the answer! Battles will occur every half hour until 11 p.m. tonight, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday (5/25) and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. both Sunday (5/26) and Monday (5/27).

Perhaps the best part is that it’s free! Get a little sneak peak at Caesars. These armored men will take another swing at it (and another and another and another) from July 4th to September 2nd too. Pencil in 5 mins on your calendar and enjoy the show!

Millionaire Maker Launches At Caesars Entertainment Atlantic City Properties And As A Sandcastle At Harrah’s Resort

You may have noticed something different around here lately as well as Caesars Entertainment Atlantic City properties.

Total AC Blog

See that Millionaire Maker tab in the upper right corner? Read it! Basically, Caesars Entertainment makes the most millionaires of all casinos.  And we’re gonna celebrate making millionaires till our lungs give out from producing the air that allows us to WOOOOOOOOO all over the place. Get it?

If you’ve been to Caesars Atlantic City, Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City, Showboat Atlantic City and Bally’s Atlantic City recently, you may have noticed Millionaire Maker decor all around – up on the walls and down on the ground. Yes, we meant to rhyme there. One place you definitely couldn’t miss the celebration of making millionaires though, is the sandcastle that sits in the lobby of Harrah’s Resort.

Check out a little before and after:

The first steps of the project (sand on the ground):

Millionaire Maker 1

The finished product:

Millionaire Maker 2

Matthew Deibert has created amazing sand creations for Harrah’s for years now and ya’ll love every single one. He’s also won numerous awards for his work including the People’s Choice World Championship in 2001, the Team World Championship in 2002 and 1st place in the New Jersey Championship 2007 and 2008. Most recently in March 2012, he was the winner of Sand Wars on the Travel Channel.

Want to know more? It’s probably better that Matthew tell you in his own words. Check out the interview with him, below.

TAC: How do you come up with the vision for the various sand sculptures you produce for us?

Matthew Deibert: Usually Caesars Entertainment has a promotion or idea that they want me to run with. For example, around Christmas time, I’ve done presents and bows and stuff like that and put the Harrah’s logo on some of the boxes. That one was a quick one because it used to be a poinsettia. Then this year, when it was coming up to that time again, I was waiting for the call and they said that they wanted it to last longer, so I said what about a Winter Wonderland type thing? I thought a snowman would be cool because they have a kind of character face, so I enjoyed doing that one.

TAC: How did this Millionaire Maker idea come to fruition?

Matthew Deibert: Caesars called me up and said that this was their next promotion, the Millionaire Maker. The only thing they had for me was this picture here.

Millionaire Maker 3

They wanted something similar to that. Logistic wise we figured out how I could do it. At first they suggested just a big bag of money, but I said that I thought I could get this and finish it out with the bags. This spot here is more performance art than anything. People just come up and they are constantly interacting. There’s a lot of return customers all the time saying things like “oh it’s about time you changed it” and “we finally see the guy who does this” and things like that. I enjoy it; I have a lot of fun.

TAC: If you had to put this process into steps for the people reading this, what would they be?

Matthew Deibert: The first process with carving sand is that first you have to wet the sand and pack it, so preparing the sand took five hours for this job. It doesn’t usually take that long on the beach, but first you have to pack the sand and wet it or else it crumbles. It’s very moist and after that, it’s a unique art form because it’s almost like clay but it’s also like wood carving because relieve and add. You have the relief and are adding three dimensional elements to it.

TAC: Typically, how time consuming is it to make one sand sculpture?

Matthew Deibert: It depends on the design and if it’s two sided. The type takes a long time. Usually two hours on one line of type and the same on the other side, so that’s just four hours of type.

TAC: What is something that goes into this craft that most people wouldn’t realize?

Matthew Deibert: Everyone thinks that there is a structure underneath the sculpture and there’s not 15 tons of sand here. That’s the main thing. They want to know what’s inside of it. They also want to know if there’s anything else mixed in it besides water and I tell them no. At the end I do spray it with a little Elmer’s glue and water and give it a little bit of a coating, but it’s just sand and water and they can’t believe that.

TAC: You’ve always had an interest in sand sculpting, growing up in AC, but what was your first experience with creating sand sculptures professionally?

Matthew Deibert: I’m a fireman in Atlantic City and another fireman had a book at the kitchen table of sand sculptures around 12 years ago. I’m a graphic artist, that was my degree. I was working at an advertising agency and I was always artistic, but I saw this and was like oh, I could do that. And then the next job was about a week later in New York. I went up with him and started working and right away I started carving and just took to it.

TAC: Do you think your degree in graphic design helps with your creations?

Matthew Deibert: Absolutely. Anybody that is carving sand professionally out there has some type of art background. That’s professionally, but anyone can carve sand castles. I teach lessons all the time to kids on the beach and I do adult team building events. Anybody can carve a sandcastle.

TAC: What are your plans for this summer?

Matthew Deibert: I have a couple jobs, one in Brigantine and the Beach Fest in Margate. They are the local ones. I’m supposed to do a contest in Cape May and actually the world championships are going to be in Atlantic City this year. I think its June 14th and it’s right on the south side of the Pier. There’s probably going to be about 40 talented artists throughout the country competing. I’m in the solo competition.

TAC: What have been some of your favorite sandcastles you have created for us so far and why?

Matthew Deibert: Like I said, the most recent one is the snowman, but when I did the 30th anniversary one and I hid 30 thirties all over the whole thing, people loved that. I had so much fun with that one because it was your building plus castle elements and thirties hidden everywhere. It was so much fun.

TAC: You have won many awards and honors doing this. Which one are you most proud of and why?

Matthew Deibert: The World Championships was nice to go compete in. It was early in my career in 2002 and to place there is just always a good thing. It’s not like it’s a lot of prize money, but just for your resume and to be able to say you won the World Championships is pretty cool. The most exciting thing recently was the fact that I competed on the TV show Sand Wars with my son and we won. It was incredible! They flew us down to Siesta Key and treated us like royalty, and here we are just playing in the sand. It was really interesting to go through the process of editing too. Winning and doing it with my son was really cool.

Take a look at Matthew in action here:

Pretty amazing stuff. And be sure to go check it out at Harrah’s Resort yourself. Also keep checking our Millionaire Maker page to see how you can get one step closer to being next!

Ride ‘Em Cowboys At Jim Beam Wild West Bar at Bally’s Atlantic City

The Jim Beam Wild West Bar at Bally’s Atlantic City couldn’t have a name more fitting. And we’re not just talking about the “Great American Frontier” vibe projected throughout. Things get crazy in this bar!

Jim Beam Wild West Bar

Perhaps the $2 selected draft beers and shots and $3 bottles all day, every day have something to do with this. That’s right, 24-hour happy hour! Or maybe it’s just plain fun! One of the “crown jewels” of the Jim Beam Wild West Bar is undoubtedly the mechanical bull (the first mechanical bull of Atlantic City) that was installed last summer. Seems only right since the first mechanical bull ever used for entertainment purposes has roots traced back to New Jersey; Bertrand Island Amusement Park in Lake Hopatcong to be exact.

Anyway, check this thing out!

Could you master this? Now take a look at how one of our friends fared.

Not too bad! Supposedly it’s all in the legs, but this guy has some good arm action going on too.

Be sure to unleash your inner cowboy or inner cowgirl during your next trip to Bally’s and try it out yourself! By the way, each ride is only $5!

After you finish taking this bull by its invisible horns, you still have several options of fun left at the Jim Beam Wild West Bar, the most popular most likely being beer pong. Beer pong is huge in Atlantic City as AC has played host to many beer pong tournaments over the past couple years (one has of course taken place at the Jim Beam Wild West Bar), but this is the only spot where you will be able to play it for kicks and on a regular basis.

The Wild West Vixens aka….The Vixens… are another popular draw to this bar. Decorated in cowboy hats, frayed jean shorts, western style belts, half cut flannel tops and cowboy boots, these pretty ladies perform choreographed routines on top of the actual bar every Thursday between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m. as well as Fridays and Saturdays between 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Think Coyote Ugly. This is Jersey after all.

And starting in April, Jim Beam will be hosting Country Thursdays featuring local honky tonk bands such as the Brian Clayton Duo, AJ Jensen Duo, Joe Bachman Duo and Rachel Allyn Duo along with The Vixens. Your favorite DJs will also continue to drop some hot beats Friday and Saturday nights. April’s DJ schedule will feature DJ Prefer and DJ Cool Jon Sprang.

The Jim Beam Wild West Bar at Bally’s AC is just starting to warm up for summer! Where else can you get mechanical bull rides, snapshots in a photo booth, arcade games, beer pong, The Vixen dancers and awesome DJs for no cover charge and a casual dress code?! The Jim Beam Wild West Bar is located on the casino floor right off the boardwalk. You can’t miss it! The bull starts operating at 7 p.m. Don’t forget and join in on the fun!

Catch Atlantic City Country Club On the Golf Channel Tonight!

Michael Phelps’ second episode of the eight part series, The Haney Project, will air tonight at 9 p.m. ET on the Golf Channel. An Atlantic City blog would only be giving you this fun fact for one reason and one reason only: Atlantic City is featured in the episode!

The Haney Project

For those not big on the golf unfamiliar with The Haney Project, golf instructor Hank Haney takes on big time celebs and helps them improve (and sometimes not) their golf game. And we watch the natural progression.  Like a caterpillar to a butterfly. Like a duckling to a swan. And so on and so forth.

As some of you Caesars Entertainment Atlantic City aficionados may remember, Michael Phelps hosted his third annual Michael Phelps Foundation Golf Classic at our very own Atlantic City Country Club back in September. And apparently Hank Haney was there too. Coaching him along.

He even talks about it in this video when our team caught up with him at The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City later that weekend.

See?

Anyway, be sure to catch the beautiful and historic Atlantic City Country Club tonight on Golf Channel at 9 p.m. Michael Phelps can get his game on there and so can you!

HOCKEY STARS AND CAESARS ATLANTIC CITY ANNOUNCE EXHIBITION GAME IN ATLANTIC CITY TO SUPPORT SANDY RELIEF

Proceeds to Benefit Empire Relief Fund, NJ Hurricane Relief Fund and American Red Cross

New York, NY/Atlantic City, NJ (November 16, 2012) – Hockey All-Stars Brad Richards and Scott Hartnell in partnership with Caesars Atlantic City today announced “Operation Hat Trick,” a charity hockey game that will take place in Atlantic City, N.J. on Saturday, November 24 at 7pm at Historic Boardwalk Hall. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Empire State Relief Fund, the New Jersey Hurricane Relief Fund and the American Red Cross, aiding New York and New Jersey families affect by Hurricane Sandy.  Tickets, which go on sale Friday, November 16 at 10am and are priced from $20 – $100, can be purchased at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office, ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, or by calling 800-736-1420.  For more information about the event, visit www.facebook.com/atlanticcityheroes

“We are all overwhelmed by the damage and destruction caused to our area by Hurricane Sandy and as professional hockey players, we wanted to come together to help those who were victimized by the storm,” said Brad Richards. “While we know the road to recovery is long, we hope a hockey game featuring some of the top players in our sport will help rally additional support for the three great organizations that are committed to helping rebuild our area.”

Richards and Hartnell will each captain a team represented by several of their professional teammates as well as other notable legends from throughout the hockey world.

“The lives that have been touched by the devastation are people in our own communities and the communities of our fans,” said Scott Hartnell.  “To have the opportunity to be able to raise money for the relief effort by participating in this game is an honor and we are asking fans of the tri-state area to assist in anyway they can to help the communities and people affected.”

Joining Richards and Hartnell, either on the ice or in support of “Operation Hat Trick”, include: Bobby Ryan, Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, James van Riemsdyk, Simon Gagne, Ville Leino, Daniel Carcillo, Steve Eminger, Jeff Halpern, Brian Boyle, Jody Shelley, John Carlson, Taylor Pyatt, Steve Downie, Wayne Simmonds  and James Neal.

“We are grateful that these athletes have come together to assist in our ongoing rebuilding efforts from Hurricane Sandy,” said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. “I’m hopeful that their efforts will be met with overwhelming support from those who are in a position to attend to help our recovery organizations.”

“A roster of this magnitude reads as though Atlantic City is hosting the American and International All-Star hockey game of the year – all to benefit those in our region affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said Don Marrandino, Eastern Division President for Caesars Entertainment. “I applaud the efforts of difference-makers like Brad Richards and Scott Hartnell, and the rest of these hockey-world superstars, as well as our phenomenal partners like the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority, Boardwalk Hall and Reebok,” said Marrandino.

“The National spotlight will be on Atlantic City next weekend, allowing the community to showcase what a diverse entertainment destination we are.  A key tactic in the strategy of revitalizing Atlantic City is offering events such as this at a time when it is most needed.  We as a business community benefit from the thousands of fans who will choose to visit our destination during that weekend and we look forward to a great event,” continued Marrandino.

The Empire State Relief Fund: Restore, Rebuild, Return

Our Mission: To provide funding, materials and services to help New Yorkers who are faced with rebuilding and restoring return to their homes and recover from the storm.

The Empire State Relief Fund is dedicated to providing resources to help recover from Hurricane Sandy and rebuild and restore homes. The challenges that New Yorkers face as a result of Hurricane Sandy are unlike any we have ever seen before. Thousands of New Yorkers saw their homes destroyed or irreparably damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Many more will face extensive, expensive repairs to make their homes habitable again. Some New Yorkers will receive a measure of assistance from private insurance, FEMA, and other government funding sources. However, in many cases, New Yorkers will face a substantial gap between the cost of repair or replacement of their home and the funds available to them to cover this cost. The Empire State Relief Fund will focus on long-term residential housing assistance to help fill the funding gap and ensure that New Yorkers can continue to call New York home.

The Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund

Hurricane Sandy has brought unthinkable devastation to parts of our Garden State, destroying homes, businesses and some of New Jersey’s most identifiable icons. The Governor and I have organized this relief fund to aide, comfort, and rebuild New Jersey. The images and stories of the damage are heartbreaking.

In the aftermath, I urge you to support our friends, neighbors and communities impacted by the storm. They need our help and need it quickly. Thank you for your generosity. We are strong and resilient.

We are proud New Jerseyans.

Hurricane Sandy Atlantic City Steel Pier Update

Hello again loyal readers and lovers of Atlantic City,

As we all work together in the beginning stages of rebuilding our city, we have some good news to report in regards to one of your (and our) favorite Atlantic City boardwalk attractions. And that good news is that Sandy was no match for the Steel Pier. All of your beloved summertime rides have remained unscathed.

Steel Pier

“This Pier that we’re on was originally built for  a 20-story hotel and it’s not built like any other pier in the country. This thing can withstand just about anything and it was not phased by the storm surge. It’s amazing. We got waves splashed, but waves never came over the Pier because of the way that it’s elevated. It’s built for a very severe storm surge. It’s just solid as a rock and we had no damage,” said Anthony Catanoso, Steel Pier President.

So for all of the naysayers out there who are quick to say Atlantic City is now gone forever, this is simply not the case. Your childhood memories of this place will not alter during your next visit to 1000 Boardwalk. All of your old favorites are here to stay and as with any case in life, you’ll also discover some new fun and memories with every trip.

“We’re moving full steam ahead right now with eight new rides this year. We’re bringing in four or five new nationally recognized tenants to the front building. We’re gonna continue with our improvements. We’re moving full steam ahead. We’re very excited for the upcoming season,” said Catanoso.

The Steel Pier even plans to have offers available on their website for the upcoming Christmas season, so keep checking back there.

We hope this news brightens your day a little bit. It did ours. Steel Pier has been entertaining you for 114 years. Here’s to another 114. Nice try, Sandy.

Your Total AC Blog Boardwalk Hall Cirque Du Soleil Dralion Sneak Peak

Look at this awesomeness we stumbled across at Kennedy Plaza while taking a leisurely stroll on the Atlantic City boardwalk earlier today.

These are the Diabolos, and they are part of the Cirque Du Soleil show Dralion that premieres at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall tomorrow. The diabolo (aka Chinese yo yo) is a children’s game where each participant “maneuvers” (juggles, tosses, crazy throws, etc.) a wooden spool on a string between two handheld sticks. That made perfect sense, right?

This picture can probably explain it better.

Cirque Du Soleil

Workin' them sticks.

And it’s also like… a contest because each performer tries to totally beast one another.

Anyway, the Diabolos are just a small number of the 50 plus International cast members that make up Dralion. Other popular acts include Kala (the cross wheel), Hibana (the Aerial Hoop) and single handbalancing. Together, they send the message that man and nature are one.

Check out these acts along with the Diabolos at Cirque Du Soleil’s Dralion at Boardwalk Hall August 29th through September 2nd. Get your tickets here.
